A Skincare Routine and Journey by Guest Blogger Zoe Marcar
As some of you may or may not know, I have struggled with my skin for quite some time. If you have the same issue then you will know how much it can affect your confidence. When I was younger, I was always told ‘It’s just your hormones! As you get older it will go away’. Now that may be true, but I am now at the age of 18 and it is still a battle.
I have been suffering with bad skin since I was younger. But with the help of a good skincare routine and a good diet, there are definitely ways of fighting those annoying blemishes.
Although, I am writing about my skincare, I am still not 100% happy. But I feel as though I have come a long way.
You NEED to remember – like I do – your skin is not always going to be perfect! If your skin is naturally spotty (like mine) you will have your moments when it’s not clear, but that’s OKAY!
I feel as if I have tried every product under the sun in the last eight years, and I think I have finally found the products that work for me. I have combination skin which means that I do get very oily on my t-zone but around my nose and eyes, my skin can be very dry.
As you can see from the photos below (2016 and 2018), around the bottom half of my face and around the mouth area have always been my most susceptible areas.
Since Christmas, my skin has started to change massively due to a change in some products and a healthier diet. Below is a photo of my skin now without any makeup on!
I will firstly tell you what not to do, what my skincare routine is now and then my holy grail products that I use around once a week. Some of the products may be on the pricier side, but if you are in the same situation as me, you don’t mind spending that little bit more for better quality products to get better results.
Just a disclaimer: I am no expert so don’t judge me, but I can just tell you what has worked for me!
WHAT NOT TO DO!
1. DON’T Buy cheap face masks
At the time this always seems like the best idea for a quick fix to your skin. But these will actually end up doing more damage than help. If you are going to use a face mask then I suggest to invest in a more expensive and good quality one.
2. DON’T Keep the same sheets on your bed for a long amount of time
By keeping the same bed sheets for over two weeks, dirt and oil can build up in the fabrics of your pillowcases and sheets over time. By putting your face on this every night, it will make you more prone to break outs.
3. DON’T Forget to take your makeup off (yes, I know after a night out it is a struggle!)
Look… I know this is a hard one, but believe me here… By not taking your makeup off for one night, it can completely reset your skincare routine. Meaning you might as well not have bothered in the first place! When you come in from a night out just quickly go to the sink or use micellar water to quickly take it off. It only takes 30 seconds and you will thank me for it the next morning!
4. DON’T Eat lots of chocolates and sweets!
I’m sure you have heard this plenty of times, but it really does make a difference. It doesn’t mean cut them out all together! It just means maybe just have some once or twice a week. Your skin will thank you for it trust me.
5. DO Give your skin a break!
I am personally not somebody who wears makeup everyday anyway. But if you are somebody that does tend to wear makeup daily, just give your skin a little break for at least a couple of days a week. It needs to breathe!
MY SKINCARE ROUTINE
I do this routine every morning and night and have linked all of the products I have mentioned down below.
Step 1: Precleanse (only necessary if wearing a full face of makeup)
- Cleanse skin at sink with Dermalogica Precleanse
- Put a pea size amount in palm and rub all over dry face
- Add water to the face, making sure to rub off eye makeup
- Rinse off
Step 2: Cleanse
- Cleanse skin at sink with Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel
- Put a pea size about in palm and rub all over wet face
- Rinse off
Step 3: Micellar Water
- Any type of Micellar Water, I use Garnier
- I just use this to get excess eye makeup off, as sometimes washing your face doesn’t get to the little bits in your waterline
- Use with cotton wool pads
Step 4: Tone
- Tone face with Pixi Glow Tonic
- Use with cotton wool pad all over face, avoiding eye and lip area
Step 5: Moisturise
- Moisturise with Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream
- Depending on how dry your skin is you can use how much you would like
- On a normal day, I would use just a small dot in the palm of my hand
- Remember to do your neck! We don’t want any wrinkles when we are older
That completes my skincare routine! However, once a week, I like to use a face mask and steam my face also – this is my favourite skincare product.
Holy grail: Body Shop Himalayan Charcoal Mask
This has honestly changed my life! If I could recommend a skincare product to anybody, it would definitely be this! You can either use this on your whole face if you’re feeling like you are in need of a refresh, or you can just put it on your break outs. Leave on for around 10 minutes – basically until you can’t move your face anymore and it’s all dry.
I hope you enjoy this product as much as I have enjoyed it. I know, I know, that it’s on the pricier side for a face mask, but if you do not do a full face every week it should last you around four months.
If I can change anyone’s skincare routine in any way, this would be the No1 thing I would add!
